Dali: 2004 Charming City Beijing This Month, 2004/10/27
CCTV's "Charming City Competition" this year explored characteristic middle- and small-size cities, and Dali in Yunnan Province won the title.
Contestants delivered a description of the charm they possess, focusing on items like long histories, their beautiful scenery, unique minority environments, energetic economies, and creative urban planning. The competition took place over three rounds. Judges included celebrities, scholars in the fields of urban planning and environment, architects, experts on folk culture, historians, journalists and professionals from international organizations.
Forty cities were selected out of over 600 in the first round, and then those 40 went through an online voting process in the second round, leaving only 20 cities remaining. The final round picked ten winners; five of which were named as a"2004 Charming Cities."
Dali features rich tourism and historical attractions and is famed for being the most beautiful and relaxed city in China. It welcomes nearly six million tourists annually, double its three million residents.
